Dr Cherrie Yang PhD

Senior Lecturer in Accountancy

School of Accountancy, Economics and Finance

Cherrie is the lead author on most of her publications and has a track record in securing both internal and external research grants (over $100k). Her recent external grant was awarded by the Australian Accounting Standards Board in 2024.

Cherrie maintains strong industry engagement. She published an industry report, in collaboration with BDO New Zealand, on a Charity Service Performance Assurance project in 2025. Since 2020, she has also served as a judge for the annual For-Purpose Reporting Awards, organised by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Cherrie is the Massey co-ordinator for the Community Accounting Program, which aims to build financial literacy in the nonprofit sector and to provide students with experiential learning opportunities in accounting and reporting. 

Cherrie has extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She currently teaches 115.112 Accounting for Business, 110.309 Advanced Financial Reporting, 110.701 Accounting Systems, and 110.732 Risk, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence. She welcomes potential PhD candidates in line with her research interests.

Cherrie is a Senior Lecturer in Accountancy. Her research has been published in leading accounting journals, including Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory and The British Accounting Review. Cherrie is a qualitative researcher, and her research areas include 

  • Nonprofit accounting, reporting, and assurance
  • Impact measurement
  • Gender accounting
  • Climate reporting

She served as a guest editor for a special issue on 'Accounting for Social Impact' in the Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management Journal in 2021.
