Associate Professor Lucila Carvalho MSc, PhD, SFHEA
Associate Professor
Doctoral Supervisor Institute of EducationI am an associate professor at the Institute of Education (Auckland). My research explores how knowledge and social structures shape the design and use of technology, and how technology influences social and educational experiences. My focus is on understanding relationships between (i)knowledge, (ii)physical and digital resources, (iii)human interaction; and (iv)how these elements combine to form productive learning networks. My research aims at producing knowledge to improve the work of those involved in creating engaging educational opportunities (in both formal and informal learning). I teach courses in the Master of Education (digital Education) and in the BA (Education).
I have published articles in education, sociology, design and software engineering. I am a co-editor of the books The Architecture of Productive Learning Networks (with Peter Goodyear, Routledge 2014), Place-Based Spaces for Networked Learning (with Peter Goodyear and Maarten de Laat, Routledge 2017) and Postdigital Learning Spaces: Towards Convivial, Equitable and Sustainable Spaces for Learning (with James Lamb, Springer 2024).

Research Expertise
Research Interests
My research focuses in the areas of design for learning and new media & technology, where I explore relationships between knowledge, physical and digital resources, and human interaction, searching for how these combine to form productive learning networks. The main drive for my research is to produce knowledge in a form that can be reused to improve the work of those involved in designing engaging educational opportunities in both formal and informal learning settings.
